I Hate My Job. Should I Quit?


All of us experience days where we wake up and don’t feel like going to work. But what if you wake up like this every day?

It’s time to figure out whether your current job is the problem or if it’s time to jump ship and pursue another career. It’s time to answer the question, “Should I quit my job?”

At this point, you’ve identified that there is something wrong with your current career path. Now that you have identified a problem, it is time to explore that problem to see if it can be fixed in your current position or if it is time for a career change.

Below are a couple exercises to help you determine what is your best option.

Exercise 1: Give your job another chance

Maybe your job is right for you after all and you’ve just hit a momentary slump. To see if this is the problem, examine your current career and what you enjoy about it.

To perform this exercise, take a sheet of paper and split it into 2 halves.

On the first half write “Likes” and on the second half write “Dislikes.” Then brainstorm all the things you like and dislike. These could be the tasks, the people, the mission, etc.

Analyze all aspects and write down everything that comes to mind. There are no wrong answers and no one needs to see this list but you.

With this information, you may be able to do some job crafting.

Job crafting is a technique has been used successfully to help others gain work happiness. You identify the activities that you enjoy, see how you can incorporate them in your current role, or have them play a larger part of your daily tasking.

Focus on the areas you enjoy and see if that renews your love of your job or if it increases your level of work satisfaction.

If not, then you may be ready to find a new career.

Exercise 2: Look to the future

Another good exercise to do is to look to the future. This is a visualization exercise.

It’s an easy one, all you have to do is answer one question: Can you imagine a future doing the job you currently have?

If you are unable to see a future in your current job, then it may be a sign that it is time to move on.

Or if you did see a future and it was one that you really don’t want, then yes, it is time to move on.

If the future doesn’t excite you, then its time to accept that your job does not and will never allow you to reach your full potential or achieve work happiness. It may pay well and offer great benefits, but those perks come at a price. Make the decision to leave, accept that you are going to do so and plan your exit.

Planning your exit

Moving on can be scary. But there are steps you can take to reduce the risk and set yourself on the path to work happiness.

More than likely you won’t be able to exit your job right away. You probably will need the money, benefits, and references before heading out on your new career path. With the career transition in mind start planning for your exit.

Think about what you need to do before leaving your current job. How can you build a bridge to your new career? Is there training that your organization offers which would help your new career? Are there qualifications you can obtain while working? Do you have your network of references in order?

Take stock of what you need to do to exit your current position and take steps daily or weekly depending on your timeline to make the transition as easy and successful as possible.

When the time to exit does come, leave on good terms. Work hard up until your last day and keep a positive attitude. This keeps your professional image intact and previous employers will be happy to give good recommendations or references.

Deciding to quit your job can be a scary option. But in my opinion, continuing to work a job that drains you is the scarier option. Life is short and you don’t want to squander your time engaging in activities that you don’t enjoy. Take control of your career and pursue your own version of work happiness.
