The only way to be happy at work or in life is to start doing things that you enjoy. Stop searching for the answer to the elusive question “what is my purpose?” and go out there and start taking action.
I’ve literally spent hours reading and thinking about what I want to do in life. After years, I’m going to tell you what I wish someone would have told me years ago.
You can read, research, and learn all you want about yourself and careers, but there is no magic answer out there. There is no one that can tell you what to do with your life. You will never find the answer in a book or a hundred books.
The only way to figure out what you want to do in life is by doing things.
You may think that you know what you want, but it’s not until you actually stop thinking about what you want and start taking action towards what you think you want that you will find out what you really do want.
Confusing? I know.
The point is to start taking action today towards what you think will make you happy. It is from this that you will find your path to happiness.
I encourage you to take that first step in your journey towards happiness today.
Start by following your interests.
Think of one thing you have always wanted to do or learn about and then go do or learn that thing today.
If it requires prior planning, make those plans today officially. Enroll in that dance class, take that Spanish lesson, research how to grow an avocado plant and go to the store to buy an avocado…you get the idea.
Just pick one thing and do that thing today. Then, keep it up.
Follow your interests every day and see where they take you.
Eventually, by following your interests and trying things out, you will find that one thing that you enjoy. Then once you find that one thing, keep doing it every day.
I promise you, you will be much happier.
Good luck! I hope this post inspired you to stop thinking about what you want to do and encouraged you to go out there and do it!
Action is the answer to finding your happiness.
